Abstract
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! We’re into our last week or so now, home stretch. I have worked on our paper, sections 4-6, but had to ask Mr. Manual Urrizola a few follow-up questions in order to finish up these sections. I will finish up after I get his response. As far as the abstract you could add (edit) in the following if it seems appropriate:
Currently the library is not using any metadata standards, although with an upcoming photo digitizing project there will be metadata used, although it is not yet determined which type. There is also interest with the map librarian to include metadata with their digitized maps.
We don’t have it hit every point or every section in the abstract, and since it is short we may not have enough space to do so. We just need to highlight the important areas. I’ll check back in after work tomorrow. Thanks.

Elluminate Session for A6 presentation
I will arrange our Elluminate session on Dec. 5th at 7:30 pm (PST) for two hours.
Please let me know if this schedule is not good for you. I will ask Dr. Bob how long the presentation will have to be.
[Unfortunately, I will have an online final presentation for the other class on Dec. 4th.
Also, I will have online practice sessions for the final presentation on Dec. 1st and 3rd at 7:30 pm. So, I will be available on Dec. 2nd if you want to practice our presentation more. Please let me know.]
Pamela, I hope you will have a nice drive to California. And, thank you for your kind words.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
A6 & Elluminate
I plan on putting together the responses to the 3 questions I worked on over the next few days.
Will 7:30 Friday work for everyone for the Elluminate session? Unfortunately, I will have a long day driving on Saturday getting down to Southern California. It will take me at least 9 hours, provided the weather is good and no rain or snow.
also.... Toshu & Amber, Good Job on your presentation. Very nice!
A6 Elluminate session
I think it's a great idea to have an Elluminate session before our presentation. Dec. 5 (Friday) after 7pm and Dec. 6 (Sat) after 5pm is fine with me.
We only have 2 weeks left to finish with our report and presentation. Should we divide up our work as according to our question section? For example, I'll be writing about #9 Staff Education & #10 Other issues? What other sections should we include in the paper?
This week is Thanksgiving week. Hope you all have a nice Thanksgiving break!
Follow up with abstract and Elluminate session

A6 Evaluation Abstract due on 12/1 & Eluminate session
Thank you for your great work on the interview.
I suggest we will have an Elluminate session to practice our presentation on Dec. 5th or 6th.
Please let me know.
Here is my abstract from my questions:
The University of California, Riverside, is one of 10 universities within the prestigious University of California system, and the only UC located in Inland Southern California.
Widely recognized as one of the most ethnically diverse research universities in the nation, UCR's current enrollment is 17,187 students.
The UCR libraries consist of 4 libraries: The Tomás Rivera Library (the main library), Science Library, Media Library, and Music Library. The main library was founded in 1964.
Mr. Manuel Urrizola, head of cataloging metadata services dept., supervises librarians and Library Assistant Vs. There are 13 supporting staff and 3 librarians. The department has two units: cataloging policy unit and cataloging & graphic control unit. Each librarian and Library Assistant III-V has cataloging specialties. The cataloging department will merge with the acquisition department. Training in the cataloging department will help productivity. Each cataloger keeps statistics to trace their productivity and use online cataloging tools including Wikipedia. The department has a cataloging website that the department stores all of its online tools, links, annual reports, and departmental cataloging guideline.

A6
I will put all together and make a power point presentation.
I will sent it to you before the interview.
I think Natalie and Pamela will join the interview session.
Please let me know.
my q's
Is database maintenance performed in house or outsourced to a vendor?
What level of maintenance do they perform?
How did you decide to perform maintenance in house? Or to outsource the responsibility? What factors were considered?
If performed in house, which position (or department) performs this duty?
If outsourced, can you explain the communication process with the vendor when changes maintenance is necessary?
If performed in house, how does staff report records that need to be corrected?
If performed in house, is training available?
Relationship with Acquisitions Department
Are cataloging and acquisitions responsibilities performed in the same department, or are they separate?
What is the benefit of maintaining a combined (or separate) department for these jobs?
What are some of the strategies staff working under these two job descriptions employ to promote collaborative relationships? Are there any blogs or wikis used for interdepartmental communication?
If so, are there notable improvements in the communication process?
If no web 2.0 tools are employed for this purpose, would you consider it? Why or why not?
My interview questions
9. Staff Education
-Does your department provide any training or continuing education on the following areas:
- RDA
- FRBR
- MARC holdings format
- Social networking
- Implementation of a new integrated library system and its various components,
- mentioned in the case study of one library
- Training in institutional repository work
- Foreign language cataloging, particularly in non-roman scripts
- Cataloging of non-books and e-resources
- Familiarity with XML (Extensible Markup Language), database tools and design, and
- Web-oriented service architecture
-With the implementation of RDA rules, what kind of changes will affect your cataloging department? Are your staffs comfortable about these upcoming changes?
-Do your staffs use as many new online cataloging enhancements as possible, such as federated searching, ,e-serial management products, and creating next generation catalogs for the learning needs of present and future academic students?
-Does your department get cataloging staffs involved with digital projects?
-Does your library have digital collections?
-How does your library prepare your staffs for the changes in the Library of Congress cataloging standards?
-Many libraries are trying to cut costs in technical services by doing more with less, such as reduce staff over time, or “dumbing down” cataloging process to make it go faster. Does your department face the same kind of budget issues?
-Does your library educate the patrons and librarians about the benefits of controlled subject and classification access?

Questions
4. Transition to Metadata Standards:
Has the library implemented the use of any metadata standards? If so, which standards and in what areas? If not, are there any plans on implementing any metadata standards?
5. Cataloging of Web Sites and Digital, Special Collections:
What does UC Libraries catalog in respect to Web sites, digital resources, and any Special Collections, and who does this cataloging? Do certain types of resources get full cataloging or other types minimal core cataloging?
6. Library Catalog/Metadata Training and Presentation:
Does the cataloging staff conduct any formal or informal training or presentations on the library catalog, cataloging, or metadata standards? If yes who is the training provided for? Library users, library staff, or others? Also, does anyone in the cataloging staff regularly work at the reference or information desk?
Also, I'm sure Toshu knows of this web site, but for the rest of us: UC Riverside Libraries Cataloging Dept: http://library.ucr.edu/?view=departments/cataloging
The page on Cataloging policies and procedures may come in handy when writing our report.

It’s great!!
We are really doing great with the answer.
I e-mail my corrected copy.
Please check the spelling and punctuations.
We are ready to submit it!
Toshu
Check points
Resource B:
Silver Spring, MD is in District of Columbia = dcu.
Type is “map = e”
So, it needs two 006 & 007
The answer indicates only one 006.
But, the ppt from our class indicates it needs two 006.
So, I added two 006.

Let's wrap up A4 Part2
So, let's move on to part 2.
Let’s be careful with punctuations and indicators! We lost 2 points on A3.
Part2
Resource A
We have disagreements on 245 ‡b .
We have to settle this
For Natalie
245 indicators: 04 ……‡h [electronic resource]
246 indicators: 3_ GDB
260 __ ………, ‡c [1990-]
538 __ Mode of access: World Wide Web.
Resource B
We agree on this one
I made my collections
040 CTA ‡c CTA
90 QC875.U7 ‡b .N3 wrong
90 QC875.U7 ‡b N3 1995 correct one (no period in front of N3) & add 1995
362 1_ Began in 1995. (without ?)
For Natalie
245 indicators: 00

I have emailed my copy of A4 with some highlighted questions. Please let me know what you think.

A4 part 2 A&B revision

I looked at your records and Pamela’s notes.
I made corrections.
I send mine by e-mail.
A3 Pt. 2
Resource A:
Please look at
Original cataloging of integrating resource part A
slides #35 Other title information for transcription
note indicates:
246 0_ $i Subtitle: $a Your first click to the U.S. government
I added 500 note
500 Hosted by the Hospital for Sick Children at Bioinformatics Supercomputing Centre.
362 1_ Began in 1990.
I don’t think we need 538 System requirement, because web browsers become common equipment.
Resource B:
Please look at OCLC#39624265
Discussion on Resource A
007 – I think subfield F is optional. I put it in there just for extra info.
050 or 090-I think 050 is assigned by LC. We should use 090 for local assigned call number.
I agree with Toshu in the call number choice here because either using Genome or Human genome as subject heading, they both came up with QH447 as call number in Classification Web.
092-Yeah I’m not familiar with Dewey number so I decided to skip this one.
245-I think either way is fine, depends on how we interpret that heading underneath the main title as subtitle or other title.
260 Publishers-I had some questions to which publishers to use also. Thanks for finding out the info for us, Pamela.
Dates-Now I’m looking at the assignment again. Prof. Ellet noted in Slide 14 that “the earliest entry is for 1996 and this may provide an indication of when the database first went online”. So maybe he’s giving us hints here?
362- If we decided that the publish date is 1996, should we say Began in 1996?
650-Ok. I changed my subject to Human genome to be more specific. I checked the Classification Web, either QH447 or QH431 works.
710-I added the “$b Bioinformatics Supercomputing Centre” part.

IR Manual
I was reading the Integrating Resources Manual from CONSER today and
found a few items to note.
Resource A probably should be cataloged as a prior publisher and current.
So Johns Hopkins University would be the previous publisher noted in a 500
note and then the Hospital for Sick Children would be in 260. The 260 field is
not yet repeatable, otherwise you could have both as Toshu had done.(pg 49) Use 550 if issuing body, but I don't think that applies in this case.
Also if you have a 362 field then you don't need the 260 $c date. One or the
other, both is not needed. (pg 46-47 & 65)
With this, I came up with the fields as follows:
Fixed fields
Ctry: onc
Dates: 1996,9999
260 __ Toronto, Ontario : ‡b Hospital for Sick Children
362 1_ Began in 1990.
500__ Published: Baltimore, MD : Johns Hopkins University, 1990-1996
Monday, November 3, 2008
Reconciling Resource A
Fixed Fields:
Elvl – pg will take out so leave blank (to match)
Orig – pg add code “s” (to match)
Freq – pg add code “u” (to match)
Ctry – if using Baltimore, MD for publisher info/wouldn’t Ctry be mdu? Why Ontario?
006 – I used the format from the previous class – how did you get your formating? Which is correct?
007 – is $f (subfield F) necessary if no sound – for leaving blank?
040 – missing on Toshu’s – shouldn’t we have this field?
050 – should be 090 or vice versa, does it matter? We should use the same field#
Also we have different LCC numbers. Probably relates to 650 (below)
092 – Dewey number – we are skipping this, right?
245 - $b do we want to have the info – “An international collaboration in support of the Human Genome Project” - or do we put into a second 246 field. What is the rationale for either?
Also $b is [website] necessary for this resource ?
260 – Do we want to use 1990 or 1996 as the beginning date? It states under the Mission Statement on the “about” page that it began in 1990 and the Hospital for Sick Children took over in 1996. The first archived “what’s new” was listed as 1996.
362 – same as above.
Note on field 362 & 260 $c – from OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards
“Follow these guidelines for entering dates for integrating resources:
When no date information is present, omit field 260 subfield ‡ c and record the approximate date in field 362 subfield ‡a, with the first indicator value 1.
362 1 Began in 1990s.
Would this apply to our dates? We do have two dates, just nothing specific on when it went online.
5xx notes – order – I verified the order of notes This is correct – nature & scope (516) , then the mode of access & sys requirements (538) Then source of title proper (500). I’ve had points taken off for wrong order of notes before.
538 – I would suggest we do add the System requirements – another place I’ve had points taken off for not having. The Netscape note was listed on two pages as a minimum requirement.
650 – I have the more specific Human genome – Toshu & Amber with just genome - shouldn’t we go with the more specific? It is also mentioned in the “Mission Statement” portion – it sounds like the database is human genome. Or is it more broad? Also relates to why we have different LCC numbers.
710 – It is Johns – plural.
710 – for Hospital… shouldn’t we have $b Bioinformatics Supercomputing Centre – it was mentioned on the “contact information” page and on the “about” page – Mission statement. Also listed in the authorities file too.
